The Huntingdon under 13s, sponsored by Urban & Civic, strolled passed Wellingborough 29-0 on a windy afternoon at the racecourse, to set us a semi-final match with Towcester.
Stags won the toss and elected to play with the wind on their backs in the first half, they quickly set up camp in the visitor’s half but Wellingborough’s defence looked strong and they proved to be a well drilled unit. The wind was having a big impact on the game and passing any distance was proving almost impossible. Wellingborough tried in vain to run the ball out of their own half but from a dropped pass Stags were awarded a scrum. Sam Durnan made a half break before off loading to a rampaging William Gould on his shoulder who ran through to score the opening try of the game. Stags continued to put pressure on Wellingborough’s line and Matthew Waring went close on two occasions once being driven into touch a couple of meters short and then being held up when his superb pack had driven him over. From a tap penalty Stags were able to double their lead when the ball was popped to William Gould who ran through several tackles for his second try of the morning. In the strong wind Adam Garrood failed to add any extras and the half finished 10-0 to Stags.
The wind was wasn’t easing up and a tense half was expected as the visitors now had the advantage. The immense Stag pack had other ideas and drove their way back up the park to continue their territorial advantage. Another strong drive saw the Stags cross the try line but for the second occasion in the match they were unable to ground the ball and a scrum was awarded. This time Sam Durnan set off on his own, twisting and turning the defence had no answers, and Sam broke free and to score under the posts. Adam Garrood converted to make the score 17-0. Wellingborough tried to gain a foothold in Stag’s half but a strong break from Luca Proietti moved the ball up field and when he released William Gould he still had lot to do. From inside his own half Will handed off two defenders before sprinting clear for his third try of the morning, making the score 22-0. Wellingborough had their only decent attack but a good tackle from Alex Lewsley put an end to that. With 10 minutes remaining Stags were able to give a run out to all 5 replacements but the changes were seamless and there was even time for William Gould to score his 4th try of the morning which Adam Garrood converted to make the final score Stags Under 13s 29-0 Wellingborough.
